Where this comes from

Fourteen years in multinational finance environments teach you something textbooks do not cover: the gap between financial literacy and financial decision-making is enormous, and it does not close just because someone earns more or holds a senior title.

Double Entry Life is built on a precise observation. Accounting already has a word for everything that feels confusing in personal finance. Depreciation, accruals, sunk cost, the difference between cash flow and income: these are not abstract. They describe what is already happening in people's financial lives, whether or not they have the vocabulary for it.

What this system is

This is not a blog. It is a financial reporting system rendered as editorial content. Every page behaves like a component of a ledger. There are four objects in the system: FY (fiscal year container), EP (episode ledger entry), Bill (single persistent entity), and the BillBoard (financial statement UI).

The system has been running since April 2024. FY 2024 was a short year, nine months, opening the books. FY 2025 ran the full calendar year under the going concern principle. FY 2026 is the restatement: three years of data, one open ledger.

Why Bill

A fictional character with precise, stable numbers allows the accounting logic to be the variable. Bill's salary, savings, mortgage, and debts do not change between episodes unless an episode event explicitly changes them. His net worth is a derived value, not an assumption. Every number is traceable to a specific EP.

Bill is not aspirational and he is not a cautionary tale. He started with 1,000 euro and a degree. Two years later he earns 1,400 net and wonders if the trajectory is right. The ledger knows. He is starting to learn how to read it.

Why accounting

Personal finance content tends to cluster around two modes: motivational frameworks with no numerical precision, and spreadsheet tutorials with no human story. This system does neither. The accounting concept is the frame. Bill's decision is the content. The ledger is the evidence.

The LinkedIn series and its parallel Substack distribute the episodes externally. The site is the system of record. LinkedIn and Substack are reporting channels, not the origin.
